Erectile Dysfunction

Explaining Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction, more commonly known as ED, is the inability in a man to obtain and/or maintain an erection. Since the penis works as a hydraulic system, with the member’s blood vessels essentially filling up when stimulated to cause an erection, any dysfunction in this area can lead to problems with the system of arousal.

The sponge-like vessels in the penis maintain blood in a healthy functioning erection. When signals are sent via nerves from the brain to the penis, these vessels are able to quickly and effectively retain blood for an erection. When that signal is blocked, for whatever reason(s), the end result is weaker erections, erections that do not last as long or no erections at all.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

There are actually many, many causes of erectile dysfunction, and it is important to note that some dysfunction can be normal. It’s only a problem if your inability to receive or maintain an erection continues. Happening every once in a while, ED is essentially normal and nothing to worry about.

Lifestyle Issues

The type of lifestyle you lead may be playing a large role in your erectile dysfunction. High cholesterol and high blood pressure can attribute to ED, as well as diabetes, being overweight, smoking, or drinking too much, etc.

Ageing

Unfortunately, ED is a side effect of Father Time. Men in their 60s are four times more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction than men in their 40s. It is just part of getting older.

Drug Use

Drugs can affect your ability to obtain and/or maintain an erection. Drugs like nicotine and anti-depressant-related SSRIs can cause ED.

Other Disorders

Things like anxiety, clinical depression, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, a stroke, kidney failure, and even various personality disorders can all potentially cause ED in some men.

Chronic Masturbation

Believe it or not, chronic masturbation can lead to ED in some men. This is bordering on psychological but is physical enough not to fall into that category. If you are an individual who masturbates frequently, either with your hand or with something like the Super Sucker Masturbator or another type of masturbation assist toy, the cold, hard truth is that you are becoming too accustomed to self pleasure and may not be able to perform when confronted with the real thing.

Psychological Problems

There is a mind-over-matter aspect of ED, to be sure. Some men have low self esteem; they can obtain a normal erection but lose it before penetration for any one of a number of reasons, including a feeling that they cannot satisfy a woman, guilt reasons such as infidelity, or a host of other reasons.

Associated Problems

Of course, the biggest problem with erectile dysfunction is that you cannot maintain an erection for sexual intercourse. But this can obviously lead to other problems in the relationship. A lot of couples never fully realize how important sex is until it’s no longer a viable option in the relationship. A lack of sex can weigh on your relationship physically and emotionally, and it can lead to infidelity, bitterness, a lack of communication, and ultimately separation. So it’s very important that men do what they can to treat their ED.

Overcoming Erectile Dysfunction

There are many different ways in which you can combat ED. With the various types of medications available on today’s market, not to even mention the various techniques passed down over the years, no man has to deal with ED if they take measures to solve the issue. Here are a few ways you can work to stop ED.

•    Oral Medications

•    Further Stimulation

•    Psychological Counseling

•    Penis Pumps

•    Lifestyle Changes

Oral Medications

In today’s market, you probably know of quite a few different oral medications you can take in order to help with your ED issues. Most ED drugs work in the same way. They increase the effects of nitric oxide in the body, relaxing the muscles in the penis and allowing for easy blood flow in response to physical or mental stimulation.

Your doctor can best decide if these drugs are right for you. They may not work right away, and it’s always best to use them in conjunction with lifestyle changes. Whether you’re talking about Viagra, Cialis, Levitra or any other drug, you should avoid taking these if you have heart disease, have had a stroke, have high blood pressure, or if you’re in generally poor health.

Further Stimulation

Sometimes all men need is a little bit of increased stimulation. This is where your partner can step up and increase his or her sexuality to potentially help with your ED. Things like role-playing, using various masturbator toys, prostate stimulation, oral stimulation, and many other sexual situations out of your particular wheelhouse may jolt an erection and fix your ED.

Psychological Counseling

If you’re young and in generally good health and cannot explain why you’re suffering from ED, then you may need to seek therapy about the issue. Your ED could be caused by stress, anxiety, depression or another psychological disorder, so make sure you seek the help necessary if this may be the case.

Penis Pumps

Penis pumps are used by many men. They can not only help you to obtain a quick erection, but penis pumps can increase the strength of the erection and even the size of the penis. To use a penis pump is simple: You place the vacuum device over your penis, create an air-tight seal, and then use the pump until the desired erection is achieved, after which you can place a penis ring over the base of your penis in order to maintain the erection.

Lifestyle Changes

A lot of men only need to deal with lifestyle changes in order to refresh that brain-to-penis connection that’s so vital in an erection. Working on your cholesterol levels and blood pressure levels might help with your ED, and giving up on the heavy smoking and drinking are also great ways to help solve dysfunction issues.

Handling the Problem with Your Partner

ED isn’t something that a man can hide well. So you’re going to know if your partner is suffering from weaker erections, shorter erections, or a lack of erections altogether. What’s important here is that you address these issues with your partner to clear the air and to let him know that it’s okay and nothing to be embarrassed about.

You can help your man handle this by being very supportive about the treatments he is willing to try. A great way to really help this go over smoothly is to change the sex up completely; make it very rewarding for him to fix his problems.

You have to understand that the male penis is really a hydraulic system. If a woman’s vagina isn’t fully stimulated, lubes and lotions can take care of the issue in an instant. But if a man doesn’t have an erection, he’s going to have a tired tongue or a busy set of fingers in trying to satisfy you. Have you ever tried to poke a hole in paper with a cooked spaghetti noodle? Yeah…

So you need to understand that it really is different for a man. It’s a very sensitive and very important area. He wants the problem solved. Your job is to make it a rewarding scenario for him when it is solved.

Above all, it’s important to use some of these ED fixes with caution. Purchasing medications without a doctor’s consent is a bad idea, and relying too heavily on something like a penis pump could actually damage the soft tissue in the penis over the long term. So always exercise caution when you attempt to handle your ED.
